Virtual Charter School

To understand what a virtual charter school is, you have to know what a charter school itself it first. The charter school is similar to public schools in that they are tuition-free and operate by the authority of a particular school district or even the department of education in a state. The difference is that a charter school is governed by parents, educators, entrepreneurs and leaders in the community.

In addition, a charter school has more freedom than another public school that is firmly under the auspices of a school district. However, they have a higher accountability for their curriculum and success of the students. So with a virtual charter school, many of the same principles apply except for the fact that students are not sitting in a classroom with a teacher. Instead they offer classes over the internet, still guided by a teacher, but the students are more autonomous with their school work and they are likely taking the school courses at home, a library or some other place that is not physically monitored by a teacher.

Students that are most likely going to take advantage of the virtual charter school program include children who may have an illness or are recuperating from one that prevents them from attending a brick and mortar school. In addition, students who are in an accelerated program and too advanced for other kids their age may take advantage of these school programs too. Homeschooled children, kids with development difficulties or learning disabilities and even students who are training for a goal like the Olympics are perfect candidates for a virtual charter school.

Parents must be fully vested in the virtual charter school in order for their children to succeed on a path where they work independently of other students. For some, this is a perfect educational opportunity and for others, alternative means may be necessary in order for the students to succeed. All in all, the virtual charter school is a new wave of education that is sweeping the country in small, but mighty ways.
