Special Education

While few parents would want to be in a situation that requires special education for their child, so many advances have been made in the area of special education that parents at least can feel confident that their children are in good hands. While various problems experienced by children were stigmas in the past, and in bitter generations past, children were institutionalized; today there is a much more humane approach to special education. While there are some cases that require institutional care, most children with Down’s syndrome, autism and other issues can live at home while receiving top-quality special education. Given the rising number of Down’s syndrome and autistic children in the population, the demand for special education is becoming greater, and many innovations are being made in this area to meet the special needs.

There is quite a range for special education. Some children have severe retardation and require intensive special education, while other children seem almost 100% normal, but have ADD or ADHD, or some children have a learning issue in a certain area, such as reading. Special education can exist as a program within a school or there are schools geared toward special education. A child might need a few classes or sessions to work on a specific problem, such as dyslexia, while he or she might be able to attend regular school the rest of the day.

There are also summer camps designed to continue special education throughout the year for children who need special therapy and extra attention. While there may not be a cure for all of a child’s symptoms, special therapy and exercises can make it easier to function. Camps can combine therapy with fun activities to develop a child’s motor, auditory and intellectual skills as well as social skills. A child can also focus on his or her strengths and engage in activities which will improve his or her self-esteem.
