School of Education
If you are interested in shaping young minds in the classroom or even teaching in an institution of higher learning, then you should refer to your school of education at the university you plan to attend. This department in many universities is rather diverse because of the different disciplines and grade levels you can concentrate on in your studies towards your degree.
The school of education will likely focus on programs such as elementary education, secondary education and early childhood education and graduate program to teach at a university or community college level. Of course, within each of these programs are specialties in certain subjects and even certification to teach all subjects in lower grade levels.
Your particular interest will guide you as to the best course of action when choosing a career path through the school of education. If you are great with young children and would love getting in on the primary shaping of a young child’s academic future, you could choose a career path in elementary education to teach kindergarten. A person with great patience and understanding of the teenage mind could become a junior high school teacher in a particular discipline of their choice like history, math, English or some other subject.
Through the school of education in most universities, you can also extend your Bachelor’s degree studies and earn a Master’s degree too. Some people will earn a Master’s degree in curriculum development while others may earn one in learning technologies or even special education which involves working with the developmentally challenged.
There is no right or wrong career path when you enter academia as teachers and professors are the cornerstone of education. Of course, if you love academia but not serving in front of a classroom, you could become a counselor, principle, speech pathologist, school administrator and or something else that catches your eye when you learn more about your course possibilities at the school of education in your intended university.
