Problem Based Learning

Problem based learning aka PBL is a global approach to education and was originally developed over two decades ago at McMaster University Medical School. Many educators feel that PBL is not only a process of learning but also a specific type of curriculum as well. When you view it as a curriculum, you will discover that there are specifically designed and selected problems which require the possession of critical thinking skills, proficiency in solving problems, self-developed learning game plans and even skills necessary for team work.

In viewing problem based learning as a process, it simply reproduces every day systemic approaches to solving issues and particular problems as well as meet challenges that you may encounter in your everyday life inside and outside of the workplace. Typically there is a role reversal in PBL as well. You, as the student, take on the role of boosting your own learning responsibility as well as providing motivation and a sense of accomplishment when a goal is attained.

In the role reversal of problem based learning, the teacher becomes the tutor, assessor and ultimate resource in manipulating the students into solving problems on their own merits. The results of PBL show that you as the student become more skilled at solving problems. In addition, you are better at guiding your own learning game plan and can actively and effectively participate in a group or team setting. This type of learning is an excellent preparation for more traditional methods of instruction. Statistics show that students who have been educated in problem based learning often does better in many assessment exams given nation-wide.

Challenging problems that are left open-ended are one of the cornerstones of problem based learning. In addition, teachers are the facilitators who guide small groups of students who are collaborating on the problems. This type of learning tends to facilitate communication as well as develop self-direction.
