Physical Education

Parents often focus on what their child is learning in the classroom or how well he or she is going to do on standardized tests. However, many people think of physical education as a side issue, and something that is not going to impact his future. If health is more important than wealth, which according to many it undoubtedly is, since many people are willing to spend thousands of dollars to maintain or to rectify their health, then physical education is an essential part of a child’s curriculum. What is the real shame is that there isn’t more physical education for adults, who need to relearn the lessons they might have learned or ignored when they were kids.

Physical education is more than just volleyball. Children exercise daily and develop good habits which will lengthen their years and give them a better quality of life with good health. Physical education also includes instruction about nutrition and making good choices in terms of diet and exercise. With the obesity epidemic on the one hand and the bulimia and anorexia epidemic on the other, it is clear that American children need significant guidance on how to make healthy choices in their diet and physical education is essential in planting the seeds of good judgment which will be reaped well into old age. Physical education will give each child the basis for a healthy lifestyle that includes good diet habits and exercise.

Physical education can also improve a child’s self-esteem by helping him or her develop physical strength to deal with life’s challenges. It can also foster teamwork through games and matches played by the kids. Kids learn to pass volleyball to another, and that is the beginning of teamwork which is a skill needed in most work environments today and in the home.
