Online Continuing Education
Online continuing education is now a very popular option for adults who have full-time jobs and/or children at home to care for or just simply when attending a campus for school is out of the question. Online continuing education gives students the ability to receive a quality education from many schools offering online degree programs or certification courses specially designed for adults interested in continuing their education after a long period outside the classroom.
There are several benefits to online continuing education for the adult who is serious about improving their current situation. Online continuing education gives the student time to take required or elected courses at his/her own convenience so that family and work can remain a priority. Many adult students appreciate that they can so easily attend class from anywhere and at any time of the day when their schedules allow. Another benefit of online continuing education is that students are grouped with other adult learners who can commiserate with the hardships of balancing work, school, and a family. Often this camaraderie blossoms into lasting friendships, making the experience doubly rewarding. Because of the lack of personalized communication between teachers and students, many instructors will give their students email addresses, office and cell phone numbers to accommodate the varying schedules of their students.
Unfortunately, there are also some drawbacks to online continuing education in addition to the rewards. Online continuing education programs usually are as expensive or more expensive than the cost of attending a school campus. This may be an issue for adult learners on strict budgets or that are not eligible for financial aid due to income restrictions. Another drawback is the amount of time that the adult learner may have spent outside the classroom. If it has been a number of years since the adult learner as attended a formal classroom environment, it may not be wise to jump into a full time engagement online. Online continuing education takes a lot of self-discipline and focus and may not be suitable for learners who have difficulty focusing or have a hands-on learning style.
