Ohio Department of Education

In Ohio, and many other states, findings have shown that there tend to be achievement gaps when it comes to education. The Ohio Department of Education has decided that they want to eliminate these gaps so that everyone is getting a quality education in Ohio. Back in 2002, the Ohio Department of Educated came up with a special group of educators to study these gaps throughout the state of Ohio. After studying them they made some recommendations that were to help get rid of these achievement gaps for good. They met several times and came up with a report that showed that bridging the achievement goals in Ohio is definitely possible with some work, and now Ohio is working hard to make this a reality.

Some things that were found by the Ohio Department of Education were astounding. They found that there were some rather large achievement gaps that would have to be bridged. One of their findings was that on a 6th grade level, only one out of every four African American children was proficient in reading skills, while 2 out of every three white students were proficient. They also found that in elementary schools, when the poverty level is high the reading achievement is low. While they found significant gaps, the Ohio Department of Education is working to lead the nation in getting rid of these gaps for good.

While every state is dealing with these educational achievement gaps, the Ohio Department of Education is definitely working hard to get rid of these gaps in their state. In the next few years their goal is to totally eliminate these gaps so that everyone is getting the same great education in the state of Ohio. There are a variety of methods that they are planning on using to accomplish this. They plan to develop a public campaign to inform the public of what they are doing and how everyone can help in these educational goals. Another thing they are doing to bridge these gaps is to make the schools in the state more accountable when it comes to the performance of their students.
