The French Language
The French language is a Romance language.  It was first spoken in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.  Today, about 300 million people throughout the world as either a native or a second language speak French in approximately 54 countries

The French language is an offspring of the Latin of the Roman Empire. Its development was also influenced by the native Celtic languages of Roman Gaul and by the Germanic language of the post-Roman Frankish intruders.

French is a formal language in 29 countries.  These 29 countries form what is called in French La Francophonie, the community of French-speaking nations. It is an official language of all United Nations agencies and a large number of global organizations.

Learning to Speak French with Native French Speaking People
In most second language classes, very little time is spent on speaking the language.  Though the language is taught, native English speaking students practice to speak with other English speaking students resulting in improperly speaking the language.  Therefore, when learning to speak French, if at all possible, it is a good idea to practice speaking with native French speaking individuals.
