Learning Disability Testing

Frustration is a common denominator for any child who has a learning problem, whether it is in math, reading or even a short attention span which precludes proper learning. When a seemingly bright child is failing in school, it is often due to a learning disability. Therefore, it is important that you as the parent work with the school district to get the proper learning disability testing to pinpoint the cause. Once the cause is determined, an individualized educational plan can be mapped out for your child to combat the disability.

Various breakdowns in cognitive skills can lead to disabilities and is the reason why learning disability testing is crucial for the child. Sometimes, a child can read but cannot interpret what numbers are much less any mathematical symbols which are a big part of solving math problems. Therefore, the diagnostician from the school or even a private psychologist will choose the proper learning disability testing to suit that particular cognitive breakdown.

Some students have language problems where they cannot pronounce words correctly and have a hard time interpreting words on a page. These two problems could be linked or they may be separate issues so testing is important to determine whether they are indeed two halves of one cognitive problem.

Learning disability testing can also help diagnose children who have attention deficit disorder as well as other learning problems. For some kids, motor skill delays can affect cognitive function. When motor skills are delayed, that affects handwriting, the ability to express themselves through the written word and more.

Because some children have disabilities that overlap, they may have to take more than one learning disability test. This is because this overlap may manifest itself in different ways and will need verification from different tests to effectively conclude the child has a particular disability that needs to be treated. However, once all the results are in, the teachers and school district can then map out a specific educational plan to address these learning disabilities.
