Learning Assessment

Whether you are a teacher trying to gauge the effectiveness of your lessons on the students or you are a parent trying to gauge your child’s overall education, learning assessment is a way to determine this. This involves having a basis in which to compare the student’s current work. This basis could be a comparison of test scores to other children in the class or even a gauge of how well a student is engaged in the work as compared to the previous year.

Learning assessment starts with the sharing of goals so that both the teacher and student or parent and child are both on the same wavelength and both understand what is expected to be accomplished. Assessing the effectiveness of education is a continuing process as people are always learning, no matter what the age. Therefore, you must be prepared to discuss goals every so often as they do change, especially as new subject matter is introduced.

Feedback is essential in learning assessment because without that give and take of information, there is no learning. Teachers should try and let the student know the reason why a problem is wrong or how to make something better so that the students can learn from their mistakes and improve. The same principles work with parent and child as well.

To an extent, the parent or teacher can allow the student to conduct their own learning assessment themselves by comparing their work to others. Those who are struggling a bit can emulate another who is excelling in their studies. Often, a model is needed in order to boost the confidence of another student in order to increase work effectiveness.

Teachers also conduct a learning assessment periodically to determine where students are at in their studies. Children learn at different rates and not everyone will be on the same page as the other. Therefore, it is imperative that the teacher have a learning assessment from which to draw conclusions on how to present the material more effectively to the students.
