Leadership and Learning
Not all leaders are born that way; some develop over time, absorbing experiences, observing and always, always learning. The mark of a true and effective leader is an existence of both leadership and learning. A real leader never stops learning; instead they are always searching for something else, observing and interacting with their followers.
When you do not actively seek learning opportunities, you are putting yourself at risk for losing leadership. Leadership and learning go hand in hand because the existence of one without the other puts the whole integrity of the group, company, classroom or whatever you are the leader of in jeopardy. Instead, by continually pursuing new knowledge and implementing new ideas, you are opening yourself and your followers up to growth.
Leadership and learning should stay on your radar as a top priority. You can promote learning in your group by leading by example. When your employees, students or whoever is following your lead sees you constantly seeking out new information and knowledge, they are going to model your behavior.
An effective leader will recognize when various modes of operation are no longer effective. You should be roll with the changing technologies, ways of thinking and doing business as well as shifting paradigms in you industry. Forecasting changes on the horizon is a part of leadership and learning. Another issue that you, as a leader, should pursue is taking stock of yourself. Conduct a self-assessment to see where you may be stacking up against your employees. If you are not growing with them or ahead of them to lead by example, you better get moving! Someone else will come along and usurp your position.
The bottom line is that you should hone your critical thinking skill and promote the ability in your team. Take on the responsibility of learning in your team or company and provide avenues for your team to pursue for the quest of knowledge. Leadership and learning is not exactly rocket science but it is a never-ending effort to always stay ahead of the game, always maintaining that thirst for knowledge.
