Law School
Attending Law School can seem to most students to be a daunting and costly undertaking. Students considering law school should note that Law School tuition is high, but it is not uncommon for law students to receive grants and scholarships.
To those students who want to study the law and perhaps become an attorney the rigorous coursework, cost and time commitment is worth it. The first year of Law School introduces students to legal institutions, legal reasoning, case analysis, and and an emphasize on judicial decisions. During the second and third year of Law School, students are encouraged to follow an academic curriculum customized to their individual areas of interest in the law .
Entering law school in the U.S. is a competitive process. Some students know upon entering their undergraduate institution that law school is their ultimate goal; others decide to attend after a few years in the workforce following college. A law student must hold an undergraduate degree in any field but is common to see students entering Law School with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science or Social Science. In most cases the degree awarded by Unites States Law Schools is the Juris Doctor degree. Other, higher, degrees that are awarded include the Master of Laws Degree and the Doctor of Juridical Science Degree. Most Law Schools are associated with a large University or College but they maintain their autonomy from that larger University. Once a prospective lawyer has been awarded the Juris Doctor they are then usually required to pass a state bar examination in order to be licensed to practice as an Attorney at Law.
In order to be accepted into Law School a bachelor's degree is required with a satisfactory undergraduate grade point average, and a satisfactory score on the Law School Admission Test. Additional personal factors are also evaluated through essays, short-answer questions, letters of recommendation, and interviews. The standards for grades and Law School Admission Test scores vary from University to University.
